Summer Skin Care: DIY Sunburn Relief Spray Using Aloe Vera Gel and Essential Oils

It's summer and that means it's time to go out and enjoy that warm sunshine! Break out those shorts or that perfect summer dress, but MOST IMPORTANTLY don't forget to take care of your skin. The effects of not putting sunscreen on your body and face will definitely show. The key to great looking skin is to take care of it BEFORE and AFTER sun exposure. I've decided to make an aloe vera gel based spray to use after a day at the park, beach, or tanning. This DIY soothing after sun spray is perfect to take the heat out of any burns and nourish skin that has spent time in the sun.

Ingredients:
  • 5 TBSP Aloe Vera
  • 1 TBSP Witch Hazel (you may use vinegar or black tea as a substitute)
  • 2 tsp Tamanu Oil
  • 2 tsp Argan Oil
  • 5-10 drops Lavender & Tea Tree Essential Oils

How to Remove Makeup Naturally & Without Makeup Remover!

You should really be putting in some time in taking off your makeup properly. If you spend 30 minutes putting it on, why not spend 30 minutes to take it off? Leftover makeup on your face can cause breakouts and leave colorful smudges on your pillow cases! You can buy makeup remover or you can just use sweet almond oil. I LOVE using sweet almond oil because it's cheap and EXTREMELY effective. I know some people use mineral oil but I don't because it's harmful to get in your eyes and it's been known to cause breakouts because of how it's processed. Sweet almond oil is great to use on your face because of it's many nutrients and benefits. These include it being:
  • moisturizing yet not greasy
  • soothing and an anti-inflammatory
  • restores the natural pH levels of your skin giving you a nice natural glow
  • reduces wrinkles and dark circles
  • reverses damage caused by sun exposure
So on top of all the benefits I just mentioned, you can use this to remove your makeup. All you need is a quarter sized amount of sweet almond oil (I recommend getting pure almond oil, not a blend), some q-tips (for eye makeup), and one makeup remover wipe (I use Burt's Bees).

A 2 Ingredient DIY Face Mask for Younger Looking Skin!

Face masks are an essential part of my skincare routine. I'm pretty partial to sheet masks, mainly due to the convenience, but sometimes I LOVE a good clay mask. Rathe than buy ones from the store, I like to make my own. Making your own face masks is great because YOU can control what you put on your skin. Get to know what kind of skin type you have and from there you can really customize a good face mask. Plus, who knows what's really in store-bought masks (let's not even mention how costly they can be!).

I decided to make a magnetic face mask using just 2 ingredients. One batch of this breaks down to $1! I've seen store versions of this mask for up to $200 (INSANE!). This Australian Midnight Black Clay mask is blended with Rosehip Seed Oil to detoxify your skin by drawing out impurities. How does it draw it out? By using a magnet to LITERALLY pull off the clay from you face (check out the video below for a demo). It's pretty awesome. This mask is also great for moisturizing dry skin and will help you get younger looking skin! Use this once a week for 15-20 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 TBSP Australian Midnight Black Clay (I got mine here)
  • 1 tsp Rosehip Seed Oil

DIY No Shine Matte Face Powder!

No one wants to spend what seems like HOURS doing their makeup and then end up looking like an oily faced mess. Matte face powder is a great way to finish off your makeup look and will leave you looking photo ready. It leaves your face looking smooth and flawless! There are a variety of different companies you can choose to buy your matte face powder but I prefer to use alternatives.  Here are my top 5 alternatives to store bought face powders:
  1. Kaolin Clay
  2. Rice Powder
  3. Corn Starch
  4. Bentonite Clay
  5. French Green Clay
Here are a few recipes to start from (mix and match as you like):

Recipe 1:

  • 1/2 TBSP Cornstarch
  • 1/2 TBSP Rice Powder
  • 2 tsp French Green Clay

Recipe 2:

  • 1 TBSP Kaolin Clay

DIY Blackhead Scrub: How to Get Rid of Blackheads and Blackhead Removal At Home

Blackheads are the result of dead skin and sebum depositing into open pores in your skin. Because the dirt and oils build up in open pores they're exposed to oxygen and become oxidized, resulting in the black colored acne known as blackheads. They're are blackhead extractor tools you can buy at your pharmacy, but daily cleansing and routine skin care should also help prevent blackheads.

I decided to try a  DIY blackhead treatment with baking soda. Baking soda not only has great uses in the kitchen but also in beauty and skincare. Benefits of baking soda for your skin include:
  • Balancing the pH level of your skin resulting in less oil production
  • Clearing up clogged pores
  • A soft exfoliator that cleanses your face without the use of harsh chemicals

The recipe calls for just 3 simple ingredients you probably already have at home. The salt will help to exfoliate your skin and the honey will moisturize it. Add a few drops of tea tree oil for its anti-bacterial properties and soothing effect!

Make and use this treatment 2-3 times a week and you should see less blackheads! First wash your face with a cleanser, Then gently massage the mixture onto problem areas in circular motions and let it sit for about 5-7 minutes. Rinse it off with a wash cloth and warm water then apply your toner and moisturizer!
Ingredients
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • a few drops of tea tree oil essential oil (optional)

DIY Face Toner and Facial Mist Using Natural Green Tea and Tea Tree Essential Oil

A toner is an ESSENTIAL step of your skincare routine. If you're not using a toner now you should definitely start using one! A toner is used right after you've washed and dried your face. After your toner you starts using your serums and moisturizers. Toners are great because:
  1. Using it on a cotton pad will remove any residual makeup you missed while washing your face.
  2. Toners will shrink the appearance of pores.
  3. Using it after cleaning will balance the pH levels of your face.
  4. It moisturizes and refreshes your skin.
  5. It can prevent ingrown hairs and acne by removing dead skin cells and oily buildup.

Of course you can buy toners but you can also make your own at home with out simple 2 ingredient recipe! This recipe calls for organic jasmine green tea and tea tree essential oil. Tea tree oil is great to add to the toner because of its soothes and heals damaged skin as well as helps treat eczema and acne! Green tea is packed with antioxidents and nutrients great for your skin! Plus the caffeine in the tea will help firm your skin.

DIY Skin Firming, Brightening and Cellulite Coffee Scrub: 3 EASY Ingredients!

Face scrubs are best used 2-3 times a week to keep your skin fresh, smooth, and healthy. A scrub helps to exfoliate the dead skin, dirt, and oils off of your face. Apply the scrub and rub it into your skin in small circular motions for 2-3 minutes. I usually use a face scrub right after using my favorite cleanser. Then I follow with a serum and a few other products. For a step by step description of my skincare routine watch the video below!

I decided to make my own face scrub using what I already have at home! I drink coffee ever morning and I've read about and seen the rising popularity of caffeine in beauty products. Caffeine helps to firm your skin and also reduce cellulite. The added vitamin C from the orange essential oil or orange/lemon juice will help to brighten your skin too! You can use this scrub for your face and also your cellulite areas if you decide to. Don't forget to moisturize after washing your face!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp ground coffee (wet or dry, it doesn't matter)
  • 2 Tbsp olive oil (or carrier oil of your choice)
  • Sweet Orange Essential Oil (or juice from a REAL lemon or orange)
  • Small container with a lid to store your scrub (I used an old glass jar)

DIY Face Serum: 3 Natural Facial Serum Alternatives

Facial serums are an important step in your skincare routine. If you're not currently using a serum after cleansing your face, you should be. Apply your serum after using a toner. Serums are jam packed with nutrients and have smaller molecules than moisturizers or night creams. This means you should put on a toner first, followed by a serum, and then finish off with a moisturizer or night. Serums are super moisturizing and certain serums can treat specific issues. Benefits of using a serum include:
  • firm skin
  • brightened and even skin tone
  • hydration and nourishment
  • acne prevention
  • skin renewal and regeneration

DIY Rosehip Oil Face Serum Recipe

Let's talk about skin care for a quick second. If you're just getting started and are unfamiliar with skin care products, this is a good post for you! After cleansing your face, a toner is the first skin care product you'll put on. You will want to use a toner to balance the pH level of your face, which the alkaline nature of most cleansing products will have disturbed. There are a couple other benefits for using toner, but I'll reserve that for a later post.

After your toner dries you will put on a face serum. Serums are lighter and more liquid based than moisturizers and that is why you should apply it before a moisturizer. If you were to put on the moisturizer before a serum, the serum would not be able to penetrate through the layer of moisturizer and would essentially be a waste of product. Anyway, I've tried a few different store bought serums before deciding to make my own. I decided to make a rosehip oil based serum because of the oil's benefits, which include:
  • hydrates dry skin
  • evens skin tone (great for freckles and age spots)
  • reduces stretch marks, scars, and burns
  • treats wrinkles and fine lines
  • it's non greasy!

Ingredients:
  • 1 TBSP Rosehip Seed Oil
  • 1/2 TBSP Vegetable Glycerine
  • 1/2 TBSP Aloe Vera Gel
  • 1 tsp Vitamin E Oil
  • 10 drops Lavender Essential Oil
  • 10 drops Tea Tree Oil
  • Dark bottle for storage (or keep your serum in a dark place, like a medicine cabinet)

    Uses for Coconut Oil: DO's & DON'Ts

Lately there's been a lot of talk about how beneficial coconut oil is. There are a variety of uses for coconut oil. I want to share some of the ways you can use it in your beauty routine and when to skip it.

    Coconut Oil & Hair

    • You may use coconut oil as a deep conditioner for your hair. I recommend spreading the coconut oil evenly on your locks and wrapping up your hair in a hot towel. After 15 minutes rinse and shampoo if needed. If you have thick, dry, damaged hair this might work well for you. I do not suggest using it on fine hair that tends to get oily.
    • Use a bit of coconut oil on your ends to smooth hair and to tame fly aways.
    • Sooth an itchy scalp by using the tips of your fingers to rub some coconut oil into your scalp.

    Coconut Oil & Your Face

    • Mix coconut oil and a fine sugar to use as a facial scrub. Coconut oil may clog pores, to avoid this you can use sunflower oil or olive oil which are less likely to clog the pores.
    • Mix some coconut oil with raw organic honey as a face mask for 5-10 mins. This might leave your face with a slighty red hue which should subside. Do a spot test before applying the mixture to your entire face.
    • Coconut oil makes a good natural eye makeup remover. Simply put some on a cotton pad, hold over the area for a few seconds and wipe away any makeup residue.
    • Use coconut oil as a lip balm! Simply spread some on your lips and enjoy its moisturizing properties.

     Coconut Oil & Your Body

    • Make a body scrub by mixing some coconut oil, fine salt and some essentials oils.
    • Massage the rough parts of your feet with coconut oil before bed. Wear some socks overnight. In the morning your feet will feel smoother and softer.
    • Coconut oil makes a nice shaving aid. Cover the area with a thin layer of the oil and shave as normal.
For more uses and tips watch our video on our Youtube Channel below that is all about Coconut Oil!
